The Legacy Sugar Maple (Acer saccharuum ‘Legacy’) is a fall beauty with dark green foliage throughout most of the season. The lobed leaves turn a vibrant orange and red in fall to really light up the landscape.
Leathery, glossy, deep green leaves on this shade tree are resistant to leaf tatter in high winds as well as leafhopper damage. Its canopy is symmetrical and dense ranging from oval to rounded in shape. The branches are wide spreading on this sugar maple. Tiny yellowish-green flowers appear in spring before the leaves. The tree’s winged fruit, or samaras, mature in the fall. The Legacy Sugar Maple is one of the best known trees of eastern North America. As a sugar maple it is valued for its ornamental value and for the syrup produced from its sap.
The Legacy cultivar is also drought resistant. This tree should only be grown in full sunlight. Full sun will also give the most intense fall color.It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. Because of its thick leathery leaves, it is resistant to urban pollution making it a good street tree. It can also be useful as a specimen tree or for privacy screening.
Prune to prevent rubbing and crossing branches in young trees. As the tree matures it only needs pruning as needed.
